What To Expect

Facing Your Mountain

We all have at least one mountain in our life, that when faced with, seems so daunting that we don't even know where to start. We ask ourselves, "am I capable of overcoming this?", but like climbing any mountain, it starts with a step....then another step....and another. With each step we learn more about the mountain. With each step we climb closer to the summit and when we finally reach it, there is an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment. We now stand at the top of this once frightening mountain and our perspective has changed as we look across the horizon. We no longer let this mountain control us with fear.  We look out in awe as the sun touches the valley stretched out before us. In that moment we're free. And even though it's inevitable that we will face many more mountains along the way, we can think back to the last mountain that we never thought we would conquer and realize that, although it was difficult, we can do it again.

What Holds You Back From Starting Counselling

Starting counselling can be difficult and feel like an intimidating mountain. There could be multiple obstacles in your way. Maybe you’ve never been to counselling and don’t know what to expect. Maybe you have had a bad counselling experience and fear trying someone new who you would have to learn to trust and retell your story to.  Maybe you think your problem isn't serious enough or you've reached the point where you believe there is no hope and no one can help you.

Perhaps your fear comes from a deep place of pain and trauma and you have tried for years to contain it and push through on your own, but no matter how hard you try, it continues to affect you. You desperately want to be free, but you are afraid of what you'll feel...of what you'll remember...of facing it head on.

Regardless of what holds you back, I encourage you to take that the first step and book an appointment. Nothing will ever change if you don't take that step forward and be open to trying something new. Our sessions together will start with building relationship, developing self-awareness, expanding coping skills and potentially healing from past hurts.

Developing Self-Awareness

Then we work together to understand how your past history has influenced the challenge you currently face and we establish achievable goals for moving forward.

Building Relationship

No matter what you're dealing with, all my sessions start by establishing a strong relationship, so you can feel relaxed, safe and free to trust and share.

Deeper Healing

If there is sufficient time and you are at a safe emotional, mental and physical place in your life, we will work on healing from past hurts, trauma and abuse. This is crucial for continuing your growth into the person you want to be and for experiencing continued freedom.

Expanding Coping Skills

Coping skills are a vital component to facing your challenge.  Just like a hiker conditions his body through exercise and self care (nutrition, rest etc) to make the climb easier, so must you condition yourself with skills that will help you manage your situation.
